  • In October of 1989, Caitlyn Adrianne Issels was born to Thomas and Rhonda Issels in Phoenix Arizona. Despite their marital issues, they attempted to make it work and stayed together for a few more years after Caitlyn's birth and having another child. Shortly after the birth of their third child, they divorced, leaving Stephanie, Caitlyn, and Mara to grow up in a split home. Rhonda married a retired Army vet, while Thomas dated younger women, and eventually re-married to a woman named Rebecca, who was ultimately jealous of his first children and tended towards neglect if not outright abuse. Due to the difficulties of the split arrangement and parental bickering between the households, it was never really noticed by any of the four parental figures involved that Caitlyn was on the spectrum.

Caitlyn, is a “high-functioning” individual, suffering from NSD (Neurodiverse Spectrum Disorder), and did her best to cope with the rough family life by disappearing into books, movies, and lots of learning. She was always fascinated with things that young girls typically aren’t interested in, and leaned towards mystery novels such as the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. That is, until she found Sherlock Holmes. She read the Arthur Conan Doyle books several times, until her step-mother took it away and forbade her from such silly pursuits and forced her to work on learning more domestically oriented skills.

By the year 2000, at eleven years old, Thomas divorced Rebecca as well, finally freeing Caitlyn from her tyrannically evil stepmother, and she could once again delve into her mystery books. By this time, the relatively modern stylings of police procedurals were beginning in full swing, and Caitlyn couldn’t watch enough of the various CSI spin-off shows as they all launched, and with her obsession finding a focus, she decided her career path. She spent most of her school years buried in books, trying to follow in the footsteps of her fantasy heroes, learning everything she could about any subject that might come up in trying to solve a mystery. Like Holmes, she felt she needed the broadest base of knowledge to draw from, as specificity blinds you to other possibilities.

She graduated from Tempe High School in Scottsdale AZ, second in her class as her chronic TV watching caused her to miss a single book-report, losing her points on her GPA. She signed up to go to college immediately, and found herself a science scholarship to the University of Colorado and attended at the campus in Boulder Colorado. There, still introverted and focused on her education, earning her Bachelor’s degree in Physics. She applied for another scholarship and grant, which she managed to acquire and transferred to the University of Denver, where she finished out her education in Forensics, spending the double-class load and time to get a masters in both field work and the laboratory, still chasing after her heroes.

Here, at least from her perspective, her life took an unfortunate turn as one of the requirements for her grant money was that she work for the Denver Police Department. She took the job, as required, but quickly ran into the struggles of fantasy versus reality. As a newly hired lab tech, she rarely was sent to the field to help gather evidence, while in the lab she was required to constantly do the lowest, worst available assignments for evidence processing, as none of her more senior techs wanted to bother. She completed her legally required term at the PD, and quickly began looking for somewhere that might possibly challenge her education, or at least be a more interesting job site.

Caitlyn herself, throughout her life, has been a loner. She’s felt awkward, never really fit in, and struggled to connect with people, including her family. While she has good ties with her sisters and birth parents, she finds herself wanting to start over in a new place. She hopes that she can find a home here, and maybe even find some form of adopted family that accepts her quirks based on her merits and skills, not out of obligations.
